You entered the number, WhatsApp promised to send a six-digit code — and silence. The timer is running, the field is empty, and a repeat request gives the same result. A familiar point: what usually follows is a frenzy of re-requests, after which WhatsApp blocks further attempts for several hours.
Do not rush to press «send again». The code gets lost in one of three places — on the way from WhatsApp, inside your phone, or on the number itself — and each place has its own signs. Let us go through them in the order worth checking.

How WhatsApp sends the verification code
When you register or log in, WhatsApp sends an SMS with a six-digit code to the number you entered. If the message does not arrive, a backup option appears in a minute — a call: a robot will dictate the code by voice. On some devices WhatsApp can also confirm the number with an automatic dropped call, with no action on your part at all.
The main takeaway from this mechanic: the code always travels through the regular phone network — SMS or a call. There is no «in-app code» here, unlike some messengers. That is why the causes of failure are always telephone-related: either the message was not sent, or the network did not deliver it, or it was delivered but hidden by the phone.
By the way, this is an important difference from Telegram — on repeat registration it sends the code to an already open session, not via SMS. If in parallel you have the same problem in Telegram, the set of causes there is different — we covered them separately.
Why the 6-digit code is not arriving
Frequent causes, in order of likelihood.
The request limit is exhausted. WhatsApp counts every repeated code request, and after several in a row it freezes sending — a «retry in…» timer appears on the screen. Until it expires, neither SMS nor a call will come, no matter how much you tap. Worse: requests made during the freeze can prolong it. If you have already tapped away — just wait out the full term.
The number was entered with a mistake. An extra digit, a wrong country code, a leading zero where there should be none. WhatsApp will send the code to the number you typed, not to the one in your phone. Check the format character by character.
The network does not let service SMS through. Messages from WhatsApp come from international short numbers, and some operators filter such traffic or deliver it with delays of tens of minutes. This is especially noticeable in roaming and on corporate plans, where service messages may be disabled at the contract level. The telltale sign: regular SMS arrive, but those from services do not.
The phone received the code but hid it. Spam filters and unknown-sender filters put such SMS into a separate folder with no notification. This is the most frustrating cause: the code has long been on the device, just not where you are looking. Below — where to look on iPhone and on Android.
The problem is on the number's side. If the number is virtual, that is a separate story — a whole section below is devoted to it.
The code is not arriving on iPhone
Open Settings → Messages → «Unknown & Spam». If sender filtering is on, the SMS from WhatsApp may sit in the «Unknown Senders» tab of the Messages app — with no sound and no banner.
Next, check the blocked contacts list (Settings → Phone → Blocked): short service numbers easily end up there after an accidental tap. And if you have an eSIM or two SIMs — make sure the line whose number you are registering with is actually enabled and selected for receiving SMS.
Focus mode does not affect delivery — but it mutes the notification. The code may have arrived an hour ago in silence: look inside the Messages app itself, not just the notification shade.
The code is not arriving on Android
First — the spam folder in your messaging app: in Google Messages it is «Spam & blocked» in the menu. Spam protection is on there by default and regularly catches service SMS.
Second — permissions. If there is more than one SMS app on the phone (say, a third-party one was installed), the code may have landed in the app you never open. Check which app is set as the default for SMS.
Third — dual SIM. The code will arrive on the card whose number you entered at registration. If it sits in the second slot with receiving disabled, or is removed — the message is lost. Slots and SIM activity are in the network settings.
The call from WhatsApp is not coming
The «Call me» button appears about a minute after the SMS request. If the call does not come:
Check the blocking of unknown numbers — both the system one and in a third-party caller ID app, if installed. Anti-spam identifiers cut robotic international calls first of all, and a call from WhatsApp looks exactly like spam to them.
Keep in mind that the call comes from an unfamiliar international number and does not last long. Call forwarding, a «blacklist by + mask», and «contacts only» mode will kill it before you hear the first ring.
If both SMS and the call are silent on a regular SIM with normal coverage — it is almost certainly the request limit. Go back to the timer and wait.
If the code is not arriving on a virtual number
The logic here is different, and it starts before any sending: WhatsApp checks the number's range, and some ranges it does not serve at all.
VoIP ranges are under a filter. Operator databases show that a number does not belong to a mobile network. A significant share of virtual numbers are exactly VoIP, and WhatsApp rejects them silently: the screen will wait for an SMS that was never sent. For messenger registrations there is a dedicated category — Non-VoIP numbers, which are identified as regular mobile ones.
Public numbers are burned out. Free numbers from open lists have been run through registration thousands of times. Such ranges have long been on WhatsApp’s block lists — the code does not go to them, and even if a number slips through, an account on a shared number does not belong to you.
A number without a voice channel. The backup call with the code is only possible where the number can receive calls at all. Some virtual numbers have no voice channel — clarify before buying, otherwise you are left with one delivery channel instead of two.

What to do, step by step
- Look at the timer. If the limit has already kicked in — wait until it ends without pressing anything.
- Verify the number character by character: country code, digit count, no leading zero.
- Check the spam and «unknown senders» folders — the code may have arrived silently.
- Make sure the right SIM is active, has coverage, and receives ordinary SMS from people.
- Restart the phone — this resets a stuck registration in the operator's network.
- Request a call and temporarily turn off the anti-spam caller ID.
- Did not help — wait a couple of hours: delivery delays on the network side do happen and resolve on their own.
- If the number is virtual and stays silent consistently — it is the range, go back to the section above.
When the problem is not on your side at all
Sometimes the code does not arrive for anyone: WhatsApp, like any service, has delivery outages. It is quick to check — outage-monitoring services show a spike of complaints in real time, and on social media it is visible from fresh posts. In that situation do nothing: every repeat request brings you closer to the limit, and they will fix it without you, usually within hours.
